"Dad, do you wish things were the way they used to be?"

I'm sure that the writer and producers of DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE felt that they had a good film here. Well they do but that is all it is. This film is not a classic or anything special for that matter. I don't even think that it is one of those films to rush out to see as it will look just as good on your television screen. In actuallity it feels like it should have been a movie of the week. Saying that, please remember that I said it was a good film and you would not be wasting your money going to see it, but do not expect anything spectacular. The acting is very impressive and there is really nothing wrong with the movie itself. It was just nothing special.

"Don't ask me to play again if you're going to be a brat."

John Travolta plays divorced father Frank Morrison who cares for both his ex-wife Susan (Teri Polo) and especially for his son Danny played by Matthew O'Leary. Susan is about to marry a new arrival to the quiet town, Rick Barnes (Vince Vaughn). Everyone in the town finds Rick a charming man who has brought much needed money to the town. Frank attends the wedding od Susan and Rick to make his son happy. There he meets a strange man Ray Coleman played by Steve Buscemi.

"You know what I found about working outside the law? I don't like working with scumbags."

Everything is going fine except for Danny's constant lying to avoid spending time with Rick. He wants to be with Frank all the time. Unfortunately, one night while sneaking out of the house, he hides in Rick's truck. Rick goes to pick up Ray to discuss some money matters but since Ray is blackmailing Rick, well, Susan's new husband disposes of Ray permanently. All this is of course is witnessed by Danny who manages to sneak away and get to his father. They end up at the police station where Danny accuses his step father but since the police find no evidence they just think Danny is up to his old tricks to get Frank and Susan back together.

"You touch a hair on my son's head and I swear , as God is my witness, it 'll be the last thing you'll ever do on this earth."

Rick is quick to threaten Danny unknown to Susan, his mother. When Rick spots Danny trying to speak to Frank, he gives Danny an ultimatium. If he does not stay away from Frank, Rick threatens to kill his father. Danny keeps quiet to avoid anything happening to his father. A slip up by Danny causes Rick to attempt killing Frank by burning down his boat building business. From here on the story is fairly predictable and I'm sure you can tell where this will lead. This is as far as I go.

"My son is living with you in your house and I don't know what kind of man you are."

The preview trailers make this film seem more than it really is. Well, if this review and the trailer interests you go see DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE; if not wait until it plays on a double feature somewhere or it is available on video.

"I've never failed Danny, ever and I can't fail him now."
